Understanding the Power of Thoughts
Your Thoughts Are Powerful... But They Are Not Always True
I Used to Believe Every Thought That Entered My Mind
There was a season in my life when I thought the loudest voice in my head was telling me the truth. When my business failed, and I didn't just lose money.
I lost confidence.
I lost hope.
I even questioned my purpose.
Every night, my mind reminded me of everything that had gone wrong.
"You're not good enough."
"You've failed."
"People are judging you."
"Maybe you'll never recover."
The strange part was this...
Nothing outside of me was saying those things. It was happening inside my own mind.
And because I believed every thought, those thoughts began to shape how I felt, the choices I made, and eventually the life I was living.
Looking back, I can honestly say this:
My biggest struggle wasn't what happened to me.
My biggest struggle was believing every thought about what had happened.
That realization changed my life.
Can I Ask You Something?
Have you ever replayed a mistake over and over in your mind?
Have you ever talked yourself out of an opportunity before you even tried?
Have you ever assumed someone was judging you, even though you had no proof?
Or maybe you've caught yourself worrying about something that hasn't even happened yet.
If you're nodding your head right now, you're not alone.
I've been there too.
And so have many of the people I've coached over the years. Here's what I've discovered:
Most of us aren't held back by our circumstances. We're held back by the stories our minds keep replaying.
The One Insight That Changed Everything
For years, I believed that if I had a thought, it had to be true. Today I see it differently.
Our minds are amazing.
They're constantly creating thoughts.
Some thoughts inspire us.
Some help us solve problems.
Some remind us of what's important.
And some try to protect us by imagining everything that could go wrong.
That's not a flaw. That's simply what the mind does.
The problem begins when we believe every thought without ever stopping to ask,
"Is this actually true, or is it just a thought passing through?"
That one question has the power to change everything.
Imagine Your Mind as a Movie Theater
I want you to picture yourself sitting alone in a movie theater.
The lights go down.
The projector starts.
A movie begins playing on the screen.
Only this movie isn't based on what's happening today.
It's made from yesterday's disappointments.
Old fears.
Painful memories.
Things someone once said to you.
Moments you wish had gone differently.
Your mind writes the script.
It casts the characters.
It adds dramatic music.
It even creates the worst possible ending.
Before long, your body responds as if the movie is happening right now.
Your heart races.
Your confidence disappears.
Anxiety takes over.
But here's what I want you to remember.
It's a movie.
It’s not reality.
The projector may be real.
The images may feel real.
But the story isn't always true.
The moment you realize you're watching a movie instead of living the moment...
You begin to reclaim your freedom.
What Can You Do When Fearful Thoughts Show Up?
I don't believe we need to fight our thoughts. We simply need a healthier relationship with them.
Here's a practice I use myself and often share with my clients.
Step 1: Pause
When a fearful thought shows up, don't rush to believe it.
Take one slow breath.
Give yourself permission to pause.
Sometimes clarity begins with ten seconds of stillness.
Step 2: Notice the Story
Ask yourself,
"What story is my mind telling me right now?"
Simply noticing the story helps you separate yourself from it.
Step 3: Ask One Gentle Question
Instead of asking,
"Why am I like this?"
Ask,
"Do I know this is true, or does it only feel true?"
That question creates space for wisdom to enter.
Step 4: Return to the Present Moment
Look around.
Take a breath.
Feel your feet on the ground.
Ask yourself,
"What's actually happening right now?"
You'll often discover that your thoughts have traveled far into the future while your life is happening right here.
Step 5: Choose One Small Action
Don't wait until every fearful thought disappears.
Take one small step anyway.
Confidence isn't built by having perfect thoughts.
It's built by taking courageous action despite imperfect ones.
Brandon's Reflection
One of the greatest gifts I've received wasn't learning how to control my thoughts.
It was realizing I didn't have to believe every one of them.
That simple understanding gave me back something I thought I had lost.
Peace.
Not because my life suddenly became easier.
But because I stopped giving every fearful thought the final say.
Your Clarity Shift
Maybe the goal isn't to think more positively.
Maybe the goal is to see your thoughts more clearly.
Because the moment you stop believing every passing thought...
You make room for something much deeper.
Wisdom.
Peace.
Confidence.
And the freedom to choose your next step with intention instead of fear.
This Week's Clarity Challenge
For the next seven days, every time you notice a fearful thought, don't argue with it.
Don't try to replace it.
Simply smile and say,
"That's an interesting story my mind is telling me."
Then ask yourself,
"What's one small step I can take anyway?"
You may discover that your greatest breakthrough doesn't come from changing your thoughts.
It comes from changing your relationship with them.
An Invitation
If this article resonated with you, I'd love to hear from you.
What's one thought you've been treating like the truth that you're ready to question?
Share it in the comments. Your story may help someone else realize they're not alone.
And if you're ready to understand your mind in a way that leads to more clarity, confidence, and emotional resilience, I'd be honored to walk that journey with you through Clarity Shift.
Because your thoughts influence your life.
But they don't have to define it.
